Hosea - Fall 2013 season
Study Guides
The story of Hosea answers questions such as “How does God feel when I run from Him?” and “How much and how long will God love me?” In the end it reveals the depth of God’s amazing love, “a love that will not let us go.”
God commissioned prophets in the Old Testament to preach in various and sometimes unusual ways. When the northern kingdom of Israel deserted God and set up their own religious system of idols and priests, the people in essence committed spiritual adultery. The prophet Hosea was called by God to live out the heartache God was going through over Israel's rejection of Him. Hosea was told to marry a harlot who would bear his children and then desert him for other lovers. Because Hosea was obedient to the Lord, his life and message became a powerful portrayal of God’s sorrow and His continuing love and yearning for restoration with His people.
As Wayne Barber wrote, “Hosea shows us the inner life of God as He ponders His relationship to Israel. The voice in this book is not a detached ruler, but a sensitive hurting husband who pleads for loyalty and longs for reunion.”
